Contact Lens Background

Contact lenses are made from biocompatible materials that are fit over the cornea of the eye in order to provide vision correction for nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Because of this close interaction with the tissues of the eye, contact lens wear is monitored carefully by your doctor to maintain the health and vision of your eyes.

Many people successfully wear contact lenses; however, contact lens wear is not possible for everyone.  Your doctor will discuss the possibilities and limitations for contact lens wear that apply to you following your comprehensive exam.
Reasons that many of our patients enjoy contact lenses include:

  • Freedom from fogging / rain - when outside with glasses
  • Improved field of view - that was limited by the glasses frame especially for sports and outdoor activities
  • Enhanced cosmetic - appearancefor those who do not like the appearance of glasses.

These potential benefits, along with vision, comfort, and fit of lenses to the eye are all assessed in the fitting process described below.
